Jennifer Steele Evans is a multidisciplinary artist and writer who explores the boundaries between the human body, self and the landscape. Physical exploration, conservation, nurture and labour in the natural world become her primary research. Through this direct engagement, she transforms myth, memory and outer landscapes into creative expression and personal reclamation.

With a deep childhood connection to hinterlands, growing up in the Welsh Marches to Welsh and Polish parents, she found her physical and emotional bodies were not safe places from an early age. Now, she views her artwork as a memorial to a reclaimed ecosystem built on lived experiences, faded memories, lessons learned and scars proudly earned. Transmuting themes of hand-me-down shame and fear-trauma cycles into dark, fertile earth, she often destroys and regenerates her pieces in deliberate acts of defiance, allowing something less perfect and more honest to emerge.

Her background spans studies in politics and media, horticulture, contemporary art and 14 years in brand communications across fashion, finance, hospitality, telecoms, health and fitness. Today, Jennifer works from her studio in North Yorkshire and was selected for the Ones to Watch 2024 exhibition at Sunny Bank Mills, showcasing Yorkshire’s top emerging creative talent.

Jennifer’s reverence for the physical body extends beyond her art. As a qualified personal trainer, she treats the body as a site of ongoing reclamation. Outside the studio, she spends her time running towards the horizon, reading history and finding new ways to make creativity an integrated way of being.
